Elizabeth McCowan is an registered psychologist with numerous years of experience of working with people with mental health conditions, a history of trauma, and persistent pain. Elizabeth previously had worked for many years as a physiotherapist and treated individuals with persistent pain.
Elizabeth is passionate about assisting people work towards improving their quality of life. Using evidence-based therapy, her work as a psychologist, is based on Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Positive Psychology. It is informed by an understanding of Neuroplasticity, Physiology, and the impact of Trauma and Pain on the Nervous System and Body. Approaches she uses include (but are not limited to) Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution Focused Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy as well as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Her work is underpinned by a respect for the Therapeutic Space, an appreciation of the Field, Psychodynamic Principles including an understanding of Ego Structure and Development, Process Orientated Psychology, Analytic notions of Individuation, and Attachment Theory.
